Domain Shield is a premium security add-on that enhances your domain’s security beyond standard registration. It combines expiry safety, online presence protection during grace periods, and mandatory two-factor authentication (2FA) to ensure that only you can make high-risk changes to your domain.
What Domain Shield includes
Once activated, Domain Shield applies the following protections to your domain:
- Extra renewal protection. You receive up to 40 days to renew your domain after expiry, ensuring a missed payment does not cause you to lose ownership.
- Uninterrupted online presence. Your DNS records remain untouched at expiry, keeping your website and email fully operational.
- Protection against unauthorized changes. Mandatory 2FA is required for high-risk actions—including domain transfers, nameserver modifications, privacy protection adjustments, and registrant contact updates—to keep your domain secure.
How Domain Shield differs from privacy protection
Privacy protection and Domain Shield are separate services that serve different purposes, and having one does not replace the other.
- Privacy protection hides your personal contact details from public WHOIS records to reduce spam and data harvesting. However, it does not prevent unauthorized transfers or changes to your domain settings.
- Domain Shield actively blocks high-risk actions unless you verify them with a one-time password (OTP). It also extends your expiry safety window and keeps your DNS active during the grace period.
Getting started with Domain Shield
Domain Shield is a fee-based add-on available for certain domain names, subject to availability. It is applied per domain and can be added during the registration checkout. The sooner you add it, the sooner your domain is fully protected.
To ensure everything works smoothly, make sure your contact details – including your phone number and email address – are up to date during registration.
