What is Portainer?
Portainer is an open-source tool designed to simplify the management and deployment of Docker containers.
Thanks to its user-friendly web interface, users with limited command-line experience can perform tasks like starting, stopping, and pausing containers, as well as viewing logs and configuring network settings.
It also provides a template system that makes it easy to deploy pre-configured containers, which is particularly useful for setting up complex applications faster.
What are the differences between Portainer and Docker?
Docker is the technology that allows you to run applications in an isolated environment called a container. Meanwhile, Portainer is a container management tool used for deploying, monitoring, and maintaining Docker containers.
Portainer’s user-friendly UI makes it easy to manage containers, especially for users who are not comfortable with command-line tools.
What containers can Portainer manage?
The primary use case for Portainer is to create new Docker container environments, manage existing ones, and monitor their performance. The tool also supports Docker Compose, a tool for running multi-container Docker applications, and Docker Swarm, which is used for clustering several Docker nodes into one virtual system.
Portainer also extends its management capabilities to Kubernetes, a popular container orchestration platform. You can use it to manage Kubernetes clusters, including pods, deployments, and services.
Beyond Docker and Kubernetes, Portainer is compatible with edge devices running Docker. This is particularly useful for IoT (Internet of Things), where numerous remote devices need to be managed efficiently.
Does Portainer support Kubernetes?
Yes, you can use Portainer to perform tasks like deploying applications on Kubernetes clusters, managing Kubernetes resources, and defining user roles and permissions within the Kubernetes environment.
How to use the Portainer VPS template?
To use the Portainer VPS template, make sure you’ve secured our VPS hosting plan.
Once you’ve gained access to hPanel, click VPS at the top bar and choose your VPS plan. Locate your VPS IP address under VPS information and copy it – you’ll need it later.
Then, head to OS & Panel → Operating System, find the Change Your Operating System section and select Applications. From there, install our Ubuntu 22.04 VPS template that comes with pre-installed Portainer CE (Community Edition).
To access the Portainer web interface, open your browser and follow these steps:
- Enter your VPS IP address and the default Portainer port of 9443. It will look something like this: http://vps_ip:9443
- On the Portainer login page, create a new admin account by entering your username and password.
- Once logged in, you'll be guided through the initial setup process, including choosing your Docker environment.
- The main dashboard will appear, where you can manage Docker images, containers, networks, and volumes.
