The Domain Name System (DNS) facilitates the communication between users and computers. It matches IP addresses to domain names, making it easier for users to visit websites.

When you enter a domain name on a web browser, you make a DNS request. Your computer will ask for help from the DNS resolver to check if the DNS record is stored locally or in your internet service providers’ cache. The DNS record matches the domain name with an IP address.

If there is no matching IP address in your cache, it will submit the DNS request to a network of four DNS servers:

  • DNS resolver
  • Root nameservers
  • TLD nameservers
  • Authoritative nameservers

In this video, you will learn how DNS works and the role of each DNS server.
