Source: Similarweb, August 2026. Figures are estimated monthly visits from desktop and mobile browsers, excluding mobile app traffic. Adult and gambling websites have been excluded from this editorial list, and the rankings have been renumbered accordingly. The results may differ from Similarweb’s unfiltered global rankings.
What are the five most visited websites in the world?
The five most visited websites in August 2026 were Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and ChatGPT, according to Similarweb. Together, they demonstrate how search, entertainment, social networking, and artificial intelligence (AI) shape online activity.
Here’s what makes each platform popular:
- Google: The world’s leading search engine, helping users find information, services, and websites.
- YouTube: A video-sharing platform used for entertainment, educational content, tutorials, and live streaming.
- Facebook: A social network connecting users through personal profiles, communities, groups, and Marketplace.
- Instagram: A visual social media platform centered on photos, Reels, Stories, and creator content.
- ChatGPT: An AI assistant used for answering questions, generating content, research, and other everyday tasks.
ChatGPT’s fifth-place position reflects the growing importance of AI platforms as major web destinations. Other AI services, including Google Gemini and Claude, also appear in the global Top 50.
Despite their enormous traffic, these platforms represent only a small fraction of the websites that exist worldwide.
Understand website traffic in your market
The most visited websites reveal where global online activity is concentrated, but the world’s biggest platforms aren’t necessarily the most relevant ones for every audience.
Search engines, social media, video platforms, and AI tools serve different needs. Regional preferences also matter, with websites such as Yahoo Japan, Naver, and Yandex maintaining a strong presence in their respective markets.
If you’re researching traffic opportunities for your own website, use these rankings as a starting point:
- Research your audience’s location. Compare website popularity in the countries you want to reach.
- Explore relevant categories. Identify leading websites in your industry rather than relying only on global rankings.
- Analyze traffic sources. Understand whether competing websites attract visitors through search, social media, referrals, or other channels.
Global rankings provide useful context, but category-specific and regional traffic data will help you make more informed decisions about reaching your target audience.
Methodology and sources
The global website rankings are based on Similarweb’s August 2026 traffic data, published on September 17, 2026.
Similarweb estimates website traffic using multiple data sources and statistical models. The figures represent estimated monthly visits from desktop and mobile browsers, excluding traffic generated through mobile apps.
A visit represents a browsing session, not an individual user. The same person can visit a website multiple times during the reporting period.
For this article, we excluded adult and gambling websites from the original dataset and renumbered the remaining entries to produce a list of 50 websites. Therefore, some positions differ from Similarweb’s unfiltered global rankings.
Traffic estimates have been rounded for readability. Rankings reflect August 2026 and may change as website traffic patterns evolve.
