Tiered discounts

Tiered discounts increase the percentage customers save as their cart gets larger – for example, 10% off at $50, 15% off at $80, 20% off at $120.

Place the first tier slightly above what customers already spend. If your average order value (AOV, which is the average amount customers spend per order) is $40, starting the first tier at $50 gives shoppers a reason to add another product rather than discounting an order they would have placed anyway.

Example: A pet supply store has a $40 AOV. For Black Friday, it offers 10% off $50, 15% off $80, and 20% off $120.

A customer adds a $35 bag of dog food to their cart. To reach the $80 tier, they also add a $25 toy and a $20 pack of treats.

The cart hits $80, and the 15% discount brings the total down to $68. The customer saves $12, and the final order is $28 higher than the store’s usual $40 AOV.

Tiered discounts work best for stores with several products priced differently. Product bundling

Product bundling sells several different products together for less than their combined regular price. Bundles increase the number of products in each order and help you move items that customers rarely pick on their own. The difference from a marketing bundle is that the price has to clear your costs, not just look like a deal.

Example: A coffee roaster sells:

Best-selling blend: $18

Single-origin coffee: $16

Branded mug: $12

Bought separately, those three cost $46. The roaster packages them as a “Coffee Starter Kit” for $36, saving the customer $10.

Before choosing that $36 price, the roaster needs to confirm it still covers the cost of all three products, packaging, payment fees, and shipping.

You can build bundles in several ways:

Complementary bundle. Products used together, like a phone case, screen protector, and charging cable.

Theme bundle. Products grouped around a single use or occasion, such as a cleanser, moisturizer, and lip balm in a winter skincare set.

Mix-and-match bundle. Customers choose from a set of products, like any three candles for $40 instead of $18 each.

Bundles also make direct price comparison harder. A shopper can easily compare the $18 best-selling blend alone across several stores. The “Coffee Starter Kit” is harder to compare directly, because a competitor would need to sell the same three products at the same combined price.

3. BOGO (buy one, get one)

A BOGO offer gives customers a second product free or at a reduced price when they buy the first one.

Common versions include buy one, get one free; buy one, get one 50% off; and buy two, get one free.

Example: A candle costs $18. With “buy one, get one 50% off,” the customer pays $18 for the first candle and $9 for the second, for a total of $27 instead of $36. Candles, socks, skincare, snacks, pet supplies, and small gifts are good examples. Think of anything someone might buy as a gift and keep one for themselves.

Check your costs across both products before launching the offer. You’re selling and packaging two units, even though the promotion is framed as a single purchase. And keep an eye on stock: a BOGO offer can move twice as many units as the number of orders suggests.

And keep the regular price of the first item honest – inflating it to cover the “free” second one can trigger the same false-savings problem regulators flag with fake “was” prices.

4. Volume discounts

Volume discounts reduce the per-unit price when a customer buys more of the same product.

The difference from tiered discounts is that tiered discounts are based on total cart value and volume discounts are based on how many of one item someone buys.

For example:

Quantity

Price per unit

Total

1

$18

$18

2

$16

$32

4

$14

$56

Set the first discount one step above the quantity customers already buy. If people normally buy one, start the discount at two.

Example: A handmade soap business charges $9 per bar. For Black Friday, it offers three bars for $22 and six for $40. The three-pack drops the price per bar from $9 to about $7.33, and the six-pack works as a ready-made gift set at about $6.67 per bar.

This works well for products people can use repeatedly or buy for several people, like food, beauty products, office supplies, pet treats, and craft materials.

5. It drops the Black Friday price to $22, close to what the set costs the store.

On the same product page, customers see:

Cutting board: $28

Knife sharpener: $15

Recipe book: $20

A customer buys the $22 knife set plus the cutting board and sharpener, bringing the order to $65. The store makes little or nothing on the knife set but sells the add-ons at their regular prices.

To keep a loss leader under control:

Choose one to three products, not your whole catalog.

Pick items that naturally lead to other purchases.

Limit the number available.

Calculate your maximum exposure before the sale starts. This knife set normally leaves about $23 after direct costs. Selling it at cost for Black Friday means giving up that $23 per unit. At 200 units, that’s $4,600 you’d normally keep.

Track how many loss-leader orders include a second product. If customers repeatedly buy only the discounted item, the offer isn’t producing the add-on sales you planned for.

6. Value-add bonuses

Value-add bonuses keep your product price the same, but give the customer something extra with the purchase.

This is a good pricing strategy when a large discount would cut too deeply into your margins, or you want to keep the regular price of a premium or handmade product.

Example. A jewelry business sells a necklace for $85.

A 20% discount would drop the price to $68, which is $17 less per sale. Instead, the business keeps the necklace at $85 and includes gift wrapping and a polishing cloth, which together cost $3. The customer gets a bonus, and the business gives up $3 rather than $17.

Other bonuses you can offer:

Free product. Buy a full-size moisturizer and receive a travel-size serum.

Longer return period. Extend returns from 30 to 60 days without reducing the price. A web designer charging $3,000 for a project could keep the price unchanged and include a bonus consultation or an extra round of revisions, rather than cutting the price by hundreds of dollars.

7. Free-shipping thresholds

A free-shipping threshold offers free delivery only after a cart reaches a set threshold.

Unlike offering free shipping on every order, a threshold gives customers a reason to add another product if their cart is close to the required amount.

Hostinger’s Black Friday statistics list free shipping as one of the top factors influencing online purchases. A threshold lets you offer free shipping without paying delivery costs on every order, while giving customers a reason to increase their cart size.

Start by checking your median order value. That’s the middle order when you sort all orders from smallest to largest. The median is a better starting point than the average because a few very large purchases can pull the average up past what most of your customers actually spend.

If your median order is $45 and you sell several $10–15 add-ons, a threshold of $55–60 makes a reachable next step for many customers.

Example: A candle shop offers free shipping on orders over $50.

A customer has a $38 candle in their cart. They add a $14 wax melt, bringing the total to $52, which qualifies for free shipping. The shop gives up the shipping fee but gains the $14 add-on sale.

Make the threshold visible before checkout: “Add $12 more for free shipping.” That tells shoppers whether one more product would qualify them.

8. Flash sales with rotating deals

A flash sale lowers the price of a product or category for a short window, then ends or moves to another offer.

Rotating the deals lets you discount only part of your catalog at a time. You choose which products get marked down during each window and how deep each cut goes. For example:

Time

Deal

Pricing purpose

8 a.m.–noon

40% off outerwear

Clear seasonal stock

Noon–4 p.m.

Buy one top, get one 50% off

Sell more units per order

4–8 p.m.

25% off accessories

Finish with a lower-cost product category

After each window closes, those products go back to their regular prices. This limits how long each discount applies, and it lets you match the discount depth to each product’s margins.

A high-margin coat category might support 40% off for four hours, while lower-margin accessories might only support 25%.

Your Black Friday landing page can show whichever deal is currently active. Price anchoring

Price anchoring shows the regular price beside the sale price so customers can see the savings right away. For instance:

Was $65 → now $45

The $65 gives the customer something concrete to compare with. Without it, they’d have to guess whether $45 is actually a good deal.

Only use a genuine previous price. Don’t raise a product’s price shortly before Black Friday just to cross it out and present the normal price as a discount. The Federal Trade Commission’s deceptive pricing guidance warns against using a false prior price to make the current price appear to be a bargain.

Example: A home goods store sells a ceramic vase for $65 year-round. It drops the price to $45 for Black Friday.

The product page states: Was $65. Now $45. Save $20.

No guessing, no mental math. The customer sees the savings immediately.

You can use anchoring in several places:

Product pages. Show the regular and sale prices together.

Bundles. Show the combined regular price of the individual products next to the bundle price.

Emails. State the regular price, sale price, and amount saved.

Showing the regular price gives shoppers a reference point for evaluating tiered discounts, bundles, and flash-sale prices, too.

Percentage vs. dollar framing – which to use?

While "20% off" and "Save $100" create the same $400 final price on a $500 product, shoppers read them differently. The early group gets a price or benefit that later shoppers don’t.

According to our Black Friday statistics roundup, 45% of consumers plan to start holiday shopping before November. An early-bird offer reaches some of those shoppers while they’re already comparing products and prices.

Example: A candle business opens its sale to previous customers and email subscribers one week early.

Early customers get:

25% off all products

Free shipping over $40

When the public sale starts, the offer changes to 20% off without the lower free-shipping threshold.

The business accepts orders before the busiest Black Friday period, and previous customers receive a clear reward for buying early.

You don’t need a formal loyalty program for this. An email list or past-customer list is enough to decide who gets early access.

11. Bump pricing (price rises after each sale)

Bump pricing starts at a low price and raises it by a set amount after each purchase until it reaches the regular price.

The earlier you buy, the more you save. That creates a different kind of urgency than a flash sale. Instead of the deal disappearing at a set time, it shrinks with every purchase.

Example: A software company normally charges $120/year. Its Black Friday sale starts at $29 and increases by $1 after each purchase.

Detail

Amount

Starting price

$29

Increase after each sale

$1

Regular price

$120

Discounted purchases available

91

Average selling price across all discounted purchases

About $74

Maximum revenue if all 91 discounted spots sell

$6,734

The first customer pays $29. The price climbs from there until it reaches $120, at which point the sale ends.

This is easier to run with digital products and services, where selling one more unit doesn’t add production, packaging, or shipping costs.

For physical products, your ecommerce system needs to update the price automatically after each purchase. Most platforms don’t support this natively, so you’ll likely need a custom solution or a specialized app.

12. Decoy pricing

Decoy pricing adds a third option to a lineup, making one of the other options look like a much better deal.

Example: A subscription box normally has two plans:

Plan

Price

Products

Basic

$25/month

3 items

Premium

$50/month

8 items

For Black Friday, it adds a middle option:

Plan

Price

Products

Basic

$25/month

3 items

Standard

$45/month

4 items

Premium

$50/month

8 items

Standard costs almost as much as Premium but includes four fewer items. Premium now gives shoppers four more items than Standard for only $5 more.

The decoy still needs to be a real offer that customers can choose. The goal is to make the differences between options clearer, not to advertise something that doesn’t actually exist.

This is easiest to use when you already sell plans, packages, subscriptions, or service levels.

13. Selective discounting based on price sensitivity

Not every product in your store needs a Black Friday discount. Selective discounting means you only cut prices on products where price actually influences which store a shopper chooses.

Start with products people can easily compare across stores. Branded electronics, common household products, and widely available accessories are good examples. If several stores sell the same wireless earbuds, a $10 price difference gives the shopper a clear reason to pick one store over another.

Products with few close alternatives work differently. A handmade bag, a locally produced item, or a limited edition is hard to compare directly with another store’s version. Discounting it may reduce your earnings without giving the customer much more reason to buy from you.

Example. A small skincare business sells both branded sunscreens ($18, available at every drugstore) and its own handmade face oils ($42, unique to the store).

For Black Friday, it discounts the sunscreen by 25% to $13.50, because shoppers are comparing that same product on Amazon and Target. The face oil stays at $42, and the store instead adds a free sample of a new serum as a bonus.

Same store, two products, two different approaches. Here’s what one sale costs you:

Cost

Example

Product

$30.00

Payment processing

About $1.50

Packaging

$2.00

Shipping paid by the business

$3.00

Average return-related cost per order

$1.50

Estimated total

$38.00

Using these estimates, the product’s price floor is about $38. That’s roughly the minimum you need from each sale to cover the costs tied directly to that order.

Keep in mind this is a planning number, not your final accounting profit. Your business still has other expenses, such as salaries, software, rent, advertising, and taxes.

At the regular $60 price, you keep about $22 after per-order costs. A 40% Black Friday discount drops the price to $36, which falls below the $38 floor. A 25% discount drops it to $45, leaving about $7 per order after costs.

Payment processing fees usually depend on the final transaction amount, so recalculate using the discounted price before you launch.

Set your limits before the sale starts:

Regular discounted products. Decide the minimum you want left after per-order costs.

Bundles and BOGO offers. Calculate the combined cost of every product included.

Free shipping. Include the delivery cost your business will cover.

Loss leaders. Set the maximum amount you’ll give up per unit and the maximum number of units.

During Black Friday, track your average order value, how many visitors are buying, and how much each order leaves after direct costs. If an offer repeatedly comes in below the limit you set, reduce the discount or end it.

How to track competitor prices during the sale

Track competitor prices by recording them before Black Friday, checking comparable products during the sale, and reviewing the changes afterward.

Focus on products where shoppers can realistically compare your price with another store’s.

Here’s a simple process that you can follow:

Before Black Friday. Pick 5–10 competing products that closely match the items you plan to discount. Write down their current prices.

During the sale. Check those pages at set times. Note price drops, new offers, and products that sell out.

After the sale. Compare those changes with your own orders to see where competitor pricing seems to have affected your sales.

If you’re only tracking a short list of products, a spreadsheet and manual checks every few hours are simpler than dedicated price-tracking software.

Don’t automatically copy every competitor’s move. If a competitor drops a product by $5, check your price floor and what your offer includes before matching it.

Your bundle, shipping terms, bonus product, or available stock may already give customers enough reason to buy from you.

Matching a lower price you don’t need to match only reduces what you keep from each sale.

How to sell Black Friday offers without a full website

To sell Black Friday offers without a full website, you can set up your products and payments on an ecommerce platform, then share a direct product link through messages, emails, or social posts.

That’s what Hostinger Ecommerce helps you do.

You add your products, connect a payment method, and get a shareable link customers can use to buy.
