{"id":468,"date":"2024-10-31T15:22:51","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T15:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.hostinger.io\/support\/2024\/10\/31\/10067986-how-to-manage-alias-records-at-hostinger\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T13:01:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:01:40","slug":"10067986-how-to-manage-alias-records-at-hostinger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hostinger.com\/support\/10067986-how-to-manage-alias-records-at-hostinger\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Manage ALIAS Records at Hostinger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"no-margin\">An ALIAS record is a type of DNS record that works in a similar way as a <a href=\"\/support\/4738777-how-to-manage-cname-records\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">CNAME<\/a> record, with the main difference that it is adjusted (flattened) to be able to work with other DNS records. <\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">Typically, a CNAME record is used only for subdomains, like <b>www<\/b>, and not for the root domain &mdash;the main domain, like <b>domain.tld<\/b>, often represented by the <b>@<\/b> symbol in the DNS zone. Allowing a CNAME on the root domain would prevent adding other essential records, such as A, MX, TXT, among others, causing issues with the domain&rsquo;s functionality. With an ALIAS record, however, this setup becomes possible.<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">If your domain is <a href=\"\/support\/1863967-how-to-point-a-domain-to-hostinger\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">pointing to Hostinger<\/a>, you can manage its DNS by following this guide.<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><div class=\"intercom-interblocks-callout\" style=\"background-color: #e3e7fa80;border-color: #334bfa33\">\n<p class=\"no-margin\">For domains pointed elsewhere, use the DNS management tools provided by the respective <a href=\"\/support\/4410887-dns-record-changes-in-other-registrars-hosting-providers\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><h2 id=\"h_dfe2b0e6f7\">How to add an ALIAS record<\/h2><p class=\"no-margin\">Only one ALIAS record can be added to a root domain&rsquo;s DNS zone. If there&rsquo;s already an ALIAS record, either edit or remove it instead of creating a new one.<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><div class=\"intercom-interblocks-callout\" style=\"background-color: #e3e7fa80;border-color: #334bfa33\">\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Enabling Hostinger CDN creates an alias record for your domain. If you need to modify the domain&rsquo;s A or AAAA records, be sure to <a href=\"\/support\/7935917-hostinger-cdn-website-optimization#h_cb55d22321\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">fully disable<\/a> the CDN first to avoid conflicts. <\/p>\n<\/div><p class=\"no-margin\">To add a new ALIAS record, navigate to the domain&rsquo;s <b><a href=\"\/support\/1583249-how-can-i-manage-my-dns-records\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">DNS zone editor<\/a><\/b> on hPanel and select the CNAME record type from the dropdown list:<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><div class=\"intercom-container intercom-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2024\/10\/6f0793c9-c3ab-4187-99ea-eedeccd8e1f3.jpg\" data-media-id=\"2270\" alt=\"Hostinger DNS records form with the CNAME type dropdown highlighted\"><\/div><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><h3 id=\"h_d0c3d649dc\">Values<\/h3><p class=\"no-margin\">Next, enter the following values:<\/p><ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\"><b>Name (Host) <\/b>&ndash; Use <b>domain.tld<\/b>, or the <b>@<\/b> symbol, which is appended by default, so no need to add it manually.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\"><b>Target<\/b> <b>(Points to)<\/b> &ndash; Enter the destination where the ALIAS record should point. This must be in the format of a domain or subdomain, for example, <b>service.website.tld<\/b>; it cannot be an IP address, such as <b>185.185.185.185<\/b>, or a URL like <b>service.website.tld\/home<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\"><b>TTL <\/b>&ndash; If you don&rsquo;t have a specific requirement, leave the default value of 14400 seconds.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"no-margin\">When all is good to go, click on <b>Add Record<\/b>. Click the <b>Delete<\/b> button to remove it, or <b>Edit <\/b>to modify its properties:<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><div class=\"intercom-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2024\/10\/623ebb94-186e-419e-8510-75f96ce625d0.jpg\" data-media-id=\"2273\" alt=\"Hostinger ALIAS record row with Delete and Edit actions highlighted on the right\"><\/div><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">After making any changes on your domain&rsquo;s DNS zone, allow up to 24 hours to be applied globally.<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><h2 id=\"h_58211f3966\">How to verify an ALIAS record<\/h2><p class=\"no-margin\">An ALIAS record flattens the CNAME to retrieve the IP address of the target domain, effectively pointing the domain to that IP. As a result, it won&rsquo;t appear as a CNAME in DNS discovery tools, but can be located by checking the A or AAAA record of the target domain instead.<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/p><p class=\"no-margin\">To check the <a href=\"\/support\/4146975-what-is-dns-propagation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">propagation<\/a> status of an ALIAS record, follow these steps:<\/p><ol>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Open the <a href=\"http:\/\/dnschecker.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\" rel=\"noopener\">DNS Checker<\/a> online tool on your browser.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Enter your domain name, select the A record type from the dropdown, and click <b>Search<\/b>.
