What Is a VPS Hostname?<\/h2>

A hostname is the name of your device on a network. For example, you will see it as the name of the server that sends emails. As for VPS, shortly, it’s how you call your server. <\/p>

Your VPS hostname will be displayed in the VPS<\/a><\/b> section of hPanel. A good hostname will help you easily identify the server that you want to manage:<\/p>

We recommend specifying your hostname as a domain or subdomain<\/b>, for example, myserver.domain.tld<\/b>, where <\/i>domain.tld<\/b> is the domain (or one of the domains) hosted on this server.<\/p>

The domain name you set as a hostname should be managed from your side. It means you should have full control over this domain name<\/b>, including the possibility to edit its DNS zone 💡 <\/p>\n<\/div>

What Is the Difference Between a Hostname and a Domain Name?<\/h2>

The hostname can be anything, like a subdomain or a simple string like MyServer<\/b>. The main difference is whether a hostname can be reached on the internet or not. <\/p>

For example, a hostname like MyServer<\/b> can only be found on your own network<\/b>, while an internet hostname like myserver.domain.tld<\/b> can be accessed through the internet as well.<\/p>

If you plan to run an email server<\/b>, it’s important the hostname is a domain name<\/b> you have full control of and is pointed to your VPS IP addresses.<\/p>\n

You should also set a PTR record<\/a><\/b> for it 💡 <\/p>\n<\/div>

How to Change the VPS Hostname <\/h2>

In the VPS<\/a><\/b> section, click on the server in question and open its Settings <\/b>tab: <\/p>

Then, scroll down to the section Change Hostname<\/b>, enter the new hostname:<\/p>

\n<\/p>

and click on Save:<\/b><\/p>

Usually, the changes are instant, but sometimes may take up to 5 minutes:<\/p>
