The right target depends on your industry, production costs, competitive position, and business goals.

Start with your industry’s typical margin as a baseline. Industry trade associations and financial research databases publish average gross margins by sector, which give you a useful reference point.

Your specific situation also affects the target:

Higher margins are possible when your product is differentiated, hard to replicate, or targets customers who are less price-focused.

A lower initial margin can be a deliberate choice – price low at first to build sales and a customer base, then raise prices later.

Your fixed costs set a practical minimum price. The higher your fixed overhead, the more you need to earn per unit to cover your costs and make a profit.

Regardless of the percentage you target, the margin has to cover all costs and leave enough profit to reinvest in the business.

3. Customers use visual identity, packaging, and positioning to judge quality before they’ve read a single word of your product description.

Gather direct evidence on what customers will actually pay:

Interviews – ask what they would pay for the product and what drives that expectation.

Surveys – include price sensitivity questions. “At what price is this too expensive? At what price does it feel too cheap to trust?”

Sales data – if you’ve sold before, analyze which price points produced the best combination of conversion rate (the share of visitors who buy) and margin.

Price testing – show the same product at two different price points to different groups of visitors, then compare purchase rates.

4. Research your competition

Research your competition by comparing how similar products are priced and positioned. Those prices show you the range your customers already treat as normal – your benchmark.

Start with direct competitors: products that target the same customers and solve the same problem. Look at four things besides price:

Product features and quality – does your product offer more, less, or the same as theirs?

Target customer – are they selling to the same kind of buyer as you?

Positioning – are they the budget option, the mid-range, or the premium choice?

Customer experience – how is the delivery speed, return policy, and after-purchase support?

Competitor prices should inform your price, not be copied directly. Matching a stronger brand’s price puts you at a disadvantage, because customers get the safer choice for the same money.

After your competitor research, decide where to position your product:

Below competitors – attracts the most price-sensitive customers, but only works if your costs are low enough to survive the thinner margin.

Matching competitors – competes on service, speed, or specific product features rather than price.

Above competitors – signals premium quality, but requires visible differentiation that customers can assess before buying.

                    Pro tip

Set up a Google Alert for each key competitor's brand and product names. Your price might land below what they would pay, so you lose profit, or above what they think is fair, with nothing about your product to justify the difference.

Competitive pricing

Competitive pricing positions your product relative to what comparable products already sell for. For example: if comparable scented candles sell for $9–$14 online, the $11.00 price sits in the mid-range, competitive without matching the cheapest options.

The competitive pricing strategy works when you can explain why your price sits where it does. Pricing above the market requires a visible product advantage in quality, features, or brand that customers can evaluate before buying.

How you structure your product page pricing – the layout, comparisons, and value signals around the number – determines whether a higher price reads as premium or just expensive.

Value-based pricing

Value-based pricing sets the price based on what customers believe the product is worth, not on what it costs to make.

Willingness-to-pay data from interviews, surveys, and price tests form the basis of this strategy. The goal is to price at or just below the maximum a customer would pay for the benefit they receive.

For example, if customer interviews reveal that buyers value a 60-hour burn time and would pay up to $16.00, that becomes the price ceiling, regardless of the $6.60 cost per unit.

                    Expert Tip

One mistake I made for Web Copy Collective’s pricing was treating it as a time transaction instead of a value transaction. If a competitor launches a similar product at a lower price, your price may no longer look justified, which is why ongoing customer research matters even after the initial price is set.

Psychological and promotional pricing

Psychological pricing uses the presentation of a price to influence buying decisions. It works alongside your core pricing strategy, not as a replacement for it.

Common techniques:

Charm pricing – setting the price at $9.99 instead of $10.00. Customers process prices starting from the leftmost digit, so the first number has a disproportionate effect on perception.

Price anchoring – displaying a higher “original” price next to the current price. The original sets a reference point, making the current price feel like a better value.

Bundle pricing – grouping multiple products at a lower combined price than buying each item separately. Increases both perceived value and average order value (the average amount spent per purchase) simultaneously.

Promotional discounts – time-limited price cuts to drive urgency or reward specific customer segments, such as first-time buyers or returning customers.

Most ecommerce platforms include discount management as a built-in feature. On Hostinger Ecommerce, navigate to Discounts in the sidebar, click + Add discount, and configure:

Discount type – Within this time frame, measure these four metrics:

Sales volume – are you selling at or above your planned rate?

Profit margin per unit – is the actual margin matching your target after all fulfillment and processing costs?

Customer feedback – are reviews, messages, or return rates signaling that price is the main issue?

Average order value – are bundles or discounts increasing the amount customers spend per transaction?

Monitor your ecommerce conversion rate alongside sales volume.
