However, setting one up can be difficult without the right tools, especially for beginners with minimal system management experience.<\/p><p>This article will explain the 7 Days to Die dedicated server setup process using two methods &ndash; automatically using Hostinger&rsquo;s Game Panel or manually with commands.<\/p><p>Both methods have the same outcome but different use cases. To change the server settings, double-click the instance and navigate to the <strong>sidebar<\/strong> &rarr;<strong> Configuration<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-setting-up-7-days-to-die-dedicated-server-manually\">Setting up 7 Days to Die dedicated server manually<\/h2><p>You can also manually set up the 7 Days to Die dedicated server using commands if you wish to use different software components. In this section, we will explain how to do so on Debian-based systems.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-set-up-your-vps\">1. Set up your VPS<\/h3><p>Before running commands on your VPS, connect to the system <a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/how-to-use-putty-ssh\">using an SSH client like PuTTY<\/a>, Terminal, or Hostinger&rsquo;s<strong> Browser terminal<\/strong>. Using this account to manage your server can be risky since you are more prone to running dangerous utilities by accident.<\/p><p>To make the setup process safer, we will create a new superuser account. This user requires the <strong>sudo<\/strong> prefix and password to run administrative commands, minimizing the risk of accidental executions. Here&rsquo;s how to do so:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a new user by entering this command. We will set up <strong>sevendaysadmin<\/strong> for this tutorial, but you can use any name:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">adduser sevendaysadmin<\/pre><ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter the user&rsquo;s password and other details, like the contact information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the new account to the <strong>sudo<\/strong> group to grant it the superuser privilege to run administrative commands:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">usermod -a -G sudo sevendaysadmin<\/pre><ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Switch to the new user using this command:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">su sevendaysadmin<\/pre><p>Your command-line interface should now start with the new username. Install necessary dependencies<\/h3><p>Now, let&rsquo;s start installing the game server&rsquo;s software components. Before doing so, update your system&rsquo;s package to ensure you get the latest version:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt update &amp;&amp; sudo apt upgrade<\/pre><p>Install the dependencies &ndash; software required for the 7 Days to Die server to run. Here is the command:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt install software-properties-common gcc-multilib<\/pre><p>Next, configure the complementary utilities that we will use for running and modifying the game server. For this tutorial, we will install the following:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/wget-command-examples\/\">Wget<\/a><\/strong> &ndash; a tool for downloading files from the internet to your server via the command line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/how-to-install-and-use-nano-text-editor\"><strong>Nano<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; a text editor that lets you modify the game server&rsquo;s configuration file.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/how-to-install-and-use-linux-screen\"><strong>Screen<\/strong><\/a> &ndash; a terminal multiplexer that enables the game server to run in the background.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/linux-tar-command-with-examples\">Tar<\/a> <\/strong>&ndash; a utility to unpack the game server component archive.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>To set up these tools at once, run the following commands:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt install -y wget nano screen tar<\/pre><p>Confirm that you have configured all the tools properly by querying their version numbers. To do so, run the following commands one by one:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">wget --version<br><br>nano --version<br><br>screen --version<br><br>tar --version<\/pre><p>If your command-line interface returns a version number, it means the tool is properly configured. Otherwise, you will see the &ldquo;Command not found&rdquo; error message and must reinstall them.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-download-steamcmd\">3. Download SteamCMD<\/h3><p>Once the dependency and complementary tools are configured, we can install<strong> SteamCMD<\/strong>. This software is the command-line version of the Steam game client, which lets you download and install the server files on your VPS. Here are the steps:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enable the non-free repository to avoid errors using this command:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo add-apt-repository non-free<\/pre><ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Run these commands to instruct the <strong>dpkg<\/strong> package manager to handle software components according to the VPS&rsquo; CPU architecture:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386<br><br>sudo apt update -y<\/pre><ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install SteamCMD from your system&rsquo;s repository using the following command:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt install steamcmd -y&nbsp;<\/pre><ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once installed, run the following to enter the SteamCMD shell:<\/li>\n<\/ol><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">steamcmd<\/pre><p>That&rsquo;s it! Navigate to <strong>7days <\/strong>&rarr; <strong>Properties<\/strong> &rarr; <strong>Beta<\/strong>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-configure-the-server\">5. Configure the server<\/h3><p>Before starting the 7 Days to Die server, open the necessary port using the configuration file and firewall to ensure the system accepts players&rsquo; connections.<\/p><p>To start, change the host settings by modifying the server&rsquo;s <strong>XML<\/strong> config file using Nano:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo nano 7daysded\/serverconfig.xml<\/pre><p>You will see various parameters for adjusting the dedicated server settings. Since we are starting the host for the first time, focus on these important configurations:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ServerName<\/strong> &ndash; the name of your game server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ServerPort <\/strong>&ndash; the port that your server uses to connect with players.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ServerVisibility<\/strong> &ndash; the rule defining whether the host is discoverable via Steam&rsquo;s games server browser screen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ServerPassword<\/strong> &ndash; the credential players will use to join your server.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Change the settings according to your preferences. While you can use the default <strong>26900<\/strong> port, we recommend changing it since cyber criminals might exploit it to access your server.<\/p><p>The 7 Days to Die server can use TCP and UDP ports of <strong>26900<\/strong> to <strong>26905<\/strong>. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.valvesoftware.com\/wiki\/7_Days_to_Die_Dedicated_Server\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valve developer wiki<\/a> to learn more about the settings parameters and their values. After you finish modifying the file, save the changes by pressing <strong>Ctrl + X<\/strong>, <strong>Y<\/strong>, and <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Now, create a firewall rule to ensure your 7 Days to Die server port accepts players&rsquo; connections. You can do so on Debian using <a href=\"\/ca\/tutorials\/how-to-configure-firewall-on-ubuntu-using-ufw\/\">Uncomplicated Firewall<\/a> (UFW). Start by installing it:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo apt install ufw -y<\/pre><p>Then, open the SSH and your game server ports. For this tutorial, we use the default values:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo ufw allow 22\/tcp<br><br>sudo ufw allow 26900\/udp<br><br>sudo ufw allow 26900\/tcp<\/pre><p>Then, enable UFW to apply the rules using the following commands. If you have UFW installed already, replace <strong>enable <\/strong>with <strong>reload<\/strong>:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">sudo enable ufw<\/pre><p>Alternatively, Hostinger users can create firewall rules without commands via hPanel. Here are the steps:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to<strong> hPanel<\/strong> and click<strong> VPS<\/strong> on the sidebar. Click<strong> Manage<\/strong> on your VPS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to the <strong>sidebar <\/strong>&rarr; <strong>Security<\/strong> &rarr;<strong> Firewall<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click<strong> Add firewall<\/strong> and enter a name.
