Just three months in, he realized it wasn’t the path he wanted.

He had his own ideas about how fonts should be presented, but no one seemed to be doing it the way he imagined. The only real option was to build something of his own.

So, he stayed for another year – figuring out what his own thing would look like and making actionable plans. In 2008, he finally made the jump. He moved to Berlin and started Mota Italic, a type foundry shaped by his vision.

As he bootstrapped his shop, he needed to handle more than just the creative work. For Rob, that included managing the website – and, for a while, dealing with constant downtime and server issues on his old host. The switch to Hostinger’s managed WordPress hosting changed all that.

Meet Mota Italic

Mota Italic is an independent type foundry that creates custom and retail fonts for clients worldwide, ranging from small cultural institutions to luxury automotive brands and big tech companies.

Around the time he was building Mota Italic, Rob had already begun studying Devanagari – the script used to write Hindi and several other Indian languages. He was drawn to a writing system that he thought wasn’t getting the design attention it deserved.

Then, at a friend’s party in Berlin, he met Kimya Gandhi, a type designer from Mumbai who shared the same fascination with Devanagari letterforms.

A shared love of one script turned into a partnership, then a marriage, then a two-person foundry that’s been running for nearly two decades.

Over 18 years of independent operation, the two of them have built a retail library of 17 type families and 609 individual fonts – totaling over a million letters.

They’ve also served 30 clients across 43 custom projects, producing 231 custom typefaces, with more than 72,000 letters drawn entirely by hand.

What makes those numbers wild is that it’s still just the two of them.

Rob handles the Latin scripts and the technical side of the business, while Kimya focuses on Devanagari and Indic typefaces.
