## How the AI visibility scan works

1. **Paste your URL** — Enter your website address. No setup or code needed.
2. **We visit your site like an AI agent** — We read your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap and llms.txt
as an AI agent. We read public content only, and don't change anything.
3. **Get your score and fixes** — See your score out of 100, your grade, the result of every check
and how to fix each issue.

## Why AI visibility matters for your website

More people ask AI tools for recommendations instead of searching, and those tools can only use
sites they can reach and read.

One vendor study found that 27% of 2,870 sites accidentally block at least one major AI crawler
([LightSite](https://www.lightsite.ai/state-of-ai-search-readiness-2026)). Even big, well-known
websites score low: ranking well on Google doesn’t mean AI agents can read and understand you.

## What the AI Visibility Checker checks

More than 25 checks in seven categories, from basic access to the newest agent standards.

- **Crawl permission** — Your robots.txt works, the main AI crawlers aren't blocked, your firewall
lets AI agents in, and you've declared how AI may use your content.
- **Findability** — Your XML sitemap has lastmod dates and is listed in robots.txt, missing pages
return a real 404, and your homepage loads over HTTPS without redirect chains.
- **Readability** — Your text is in the HTML without JavaScript, fits a reasonable token budget, and
has a title, meta description, canonical and one clear H1.
- **Structured meaning** — JSON-LD with a complete Organization or LocalBusiness schema, sameAs
links to your profiles, and several schema types.
- **Commercial legibility** — Linked about, contact and legal pages, machine-readable contact
details, and prices AI can reach without JavaScript or a login.
- **Agent-native content** — A well-formed llms.txt, a Markdown version when agents ask for one, and
Link headers that point agents to both.
- **Agent interaction** — WebMCP tools for in-browser agents and a published MCP Server Card. Few
  websites have these yet.

## How your AI readiness score is calculated

We check your site against seven categories and give it a score out of 100. The checks that matter
most, like whether AI tools can find and read your site, carry the most points. Your final score also
comes with a letter grade.

| Category | Points | What earns the points |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Crawl permission | 20 | robots.txt present and parseable (4) · AI crawlers not blocked (7) · not blocked by bot detection (6) · Content Signals declared (3) |
| Readability | 18 | Content readable without JavaScript (8) · reasonable token budget (3) · title, meta description and canonical (4) · clear heading hierarchy (3) |
| Findability | 16 | Sitemap lists URLs (5) · sitemap declared in robots.txt (3) · recent lastmod dates (3) · real 404 for missing pages (3) · clean HTTPS homepage (2) |
| Structured meaning | 14 | JSON-LD present (6) · complete Organization or LocalBusiness schema (4) · sameAs links (2) · several schema types (2) |
| Commercial legibility | 12 | About, contact and legal pages linked (4) · machine-readable contact details (4) · prices reachable without JavaScript or login (4) |
| Agent-native content | 10 | llms.txt served (4) · llms.txt well-formed (3) · Markdown served on request (2) · Link headers (1) |
| Agent interaction | 10 | WebMCP tools exposed (6) · MCP Server Card published (4) |

If a check can't apply, for example llms.txt formatting when there's no llms.txt, it's marked "Not
checked".

## Understand your results

For every check, we explain what's going on and how to fix it. Start with the area where you lost
the most points, then scan your site again to see your new score.

- **What we found** — A simple explanation of what's working on your site and what isn't.
- **How to fix** — Clear, short steps to fix each issue. No technical background needed.
- **Copy prompt** — Copy a ready-made message and paste it into an AI tool like ChatGPT, or send it
  to whoever manages your website.

## How to improve your website's AI readiness

- **Let AI crawlers in** — Remove robots.txt rules that block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or
PerplexityBot, check your firewall or CDN, and add a Content-Signal line like "search=yes, ai-
  train=no".
- **Help AI find your pages** — Publish an XML sitemap with lastmod dates, list it in robots.txt,
return a 404 for missing pages, and redirect your homepage to HTTPS in one hop.
- **Make your content readable** — Put your main text in the HTML the server sends, and give every
page a title, meta description, canonical tag and one H1.
- **Tell AI who you are** — Add Organization or LocalBusiness JSON-LD with sameAs links to your
profiles. Most [WordPress](https://www.hostinger.com/wordpress-hosting) SEO plugins handle the basics.
- **Make your business legible** — Link about, contact and legal pages from your homepage, use
mailto: or tel: links, and link a pricing page or add Offer schema.
- **Add llms.txt and Markdown** — Publish an [llms.txt](https://www.hostinger.com/tutorials/what-is-llms-txt) that sums up your site, serve Markdown when
agents ask, and point to both with a Link header.
- **Let agents take action (optional)** — Expose search, bookings or purchases as WebMCP tools and
  publish an MCP Server Card.

## AI visibility checker vs AI visibility tracker: Know what you're measuring first

A checker tests whether AI can access and read your website. A tracker counts how often AI tools
like ChatGPT or Perplexity mention your brand. Start with a checker: AI can't cite a site it can't
read.

| | AI visibility checker (this tool) | AI visibility tracker |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Question it answers | Can AI access and read my website? | Does AI mention my brand in its answers? |
| What it looks at | Your robots.txt, homepage, sitemap and site files | Thousands of AI prompts and answers |
| What you get | A score out of 100, a grade and a fix for every issue | Mention counts, share of voice and sentiment |
| When to use it | First, and after every site change | Once AI can read your site |
| Price | Free | Usually a paid subscription |

## AI Visibility Checker FAQs

### What is an AI visibility checker?

An AI visibility checker tests whether AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity can
access and understand your website. [Hostinger](https://www.hostinger.com/)'s checker visits your site like an AI agent, runs more
than 25 checks across seven categories, and gives you a score out of 100 with a fix for every issue.

### Is the AI Visibility Checker free?

Yes. The AI Visibility Checker is free to use. Paste your website address, run the scan, and you'll see
your score out of 100, your grade, the result of every check and how to fix each issue, plus a
ready-made prompt you can paste into an AI tool or send to your developer.

### Does this tool show whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?

No. This tool checks whether AI can access and understand your website, not how often AI answers
mention your brand. Mention tracking needs a different tool that runs prompts at scale. Access comes
first, though: if AI crawlers can't read your pages, AI tools can't cite or recommend them.

### Which AI crawlers does the checker test?

The checker reads your robots.txt rules for the main AI crawlers, such as GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot from
OpenAI, ClaudeBot from Anthropic and PerplexityBot. It also requests your homepage with an AI agent
user agent to see whether a firewall or bot protection blocks it, even when robots.txt allows access.

### How is the AI readiness score calculated?

Your score is out of 100 points across seven categories: crawl permission (20), readability (18),
findability (16), structured meaning (14), commercial legibility (12), agent-native content (10) and
agent interaction (10). Each check is worth a fixed number of points, and checks that can't apply are
marked "Not checked".

### What is a good AI readiness score?

The higher the better, and every point comes from a concrete fix. Aim to get full points in crawl
permission, findability and readability first, because without them AI can't reach or read your site.
Scores in agent interaction are low for most websites, as WebMCP and MCP Server Cards are still new.

### Why can't ChatGPT see my website?

The most common reasons are a robots.txt rule that blocks OpenAI's crawlers, a firewall or CDN that
rejects bot traffic, and content that only appears after JavaScript runs. Many AI crawlers read the raw
HTML and don't run scripts, so they may see an almost empty page. The scan shows which of these affects
your site.

### Should I block or allow AI crawlers?

It depends on your goals. If you want AI tools to find, cite and recommend your site, allow search and
user-triggered bots like OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and PerplexityBot. If you don't want your content
used to train AI models, you can block training crawlers like GPTBot without disappearing from AI
search.

### What is a Content-Signal in robots.txt?

A Content-Signal is a line in robots.txt that states how your content may be used once it's crawled,
for example "search=yes, ai-train=no". It lets you allow AI search while opting out of model training.
It doesn't technically block anyone, but it makes your preferences clear to AI companies.

### What is llms.txt, and do I need one?

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of your website that gives AI tools a short summary of your
site and links to your most important pages. It's a proposed standard rather than a requirement, but it
takes minutes to add, and the checker scores both whether it exists and whether it's well-formed.

### Does the checker scan my whole website?

No. The checker looks at your homepage and the site-wide files AI agents rely on, such as robots.txt,
your sitemap, llms.txt and your MCP Server Card. That gives a fast, consistent picture of how AI sees
your site. Fixes like structured data and clear headings should then be applied across all your pages.

### Why is my score low if my site ranks well on Google?

Search engines and AI agents look for different things. A site can rank well and still lack llms.txt, a
Markdown version, structured business details, machine-readable contact information or agent
protocols. Many large, well-known websites score low today, so a few fixes can put you ahead of bigger
competitors.

### Is an AI visibility checker the same as an SEO checker?

Not quite. An SEO checker looks at how search engines crawl and rank your pages. An AI visibility
checker, sometimes called an LLM SEO checker, looks at whether AI crawlers and agents can access, read
and use your site. Basics like sitemaps and headings help both, but AI adds new needs like llms.txt.

### What are MCP and WebMCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI agents connect to tools and data, and an
MCP Server Card tells agents what your server offers. WebMCP lets a web page expose actions, such as
search or booking, that an AI agent in the browser can use directly. Both are optional for most
websites today.

### How do I improve my AI readiness score?

Start with the category where you lost the most points. Each failed check explains what we found and
how to fix it, with a prompt you can copy into ChatGPT, Claude or your AI coding tool. Most fixes take
minutes, such as adding a canonical tag or an llms.txt file. Then scan again.
